On 29 July 2020, Chamber of Economy of Montenegro organised a matching event “Intellectual Property Rights and Innovative Solutions in the Maritime Sector through Cooperation of SMEs, Scientific and Research Institutions and Public Institutions”.

The intention of the organisers was to provide a framework for networking of maritime industry, academia and public bodies, to boost their cooperation and eventually result in concrete articulation of the enterprises’ innovative ideas and finding their way to potential investors.

The participants at the sessions were representatives of all relevant institutions dealing with the maritime sector in Montenegro, the academia and the SMEs working in the maritime sector. The event was organised in two thematic sessions. The first session was dedicated to alternative energy sources and environmental protection and the topics covered were: the trends of air pollution from ships – statistics, challenges and solutions, Montenegrin flagships in blue growth, innovative solutions for the protection of the sea and coastal area in Montenegro and intellectual property rights in Montenegro and the EU. The second session dealt with the shipping industry, cruising, nautics and logistics and the topics discussed were: contemporary maritime sector in  Montenegro, influence of maritime industry on the Montenegrin economy, networking opportunities for maritime businesses, operations of maritime agencies, international and national legislation in the shipping industry and yachting, innovations in the shipping industry (autonomous vessels, new materials for the construction of vessels, etc.), training and licensing of sailors, innovations in the maritime safety (new generation sensors, drones for monitoring of the sea and coastal area) and the related issues of intellectual property rights.

The enterprises expressed their opinion that given the Montenegrin size and capacities, our enteprises should aim at smaller innovative solutions or the legal use and upgrade of the existing ones because major innovations require significant investments.

Chamber of Montenegro used this opportunity to present some examples from innovative solutions from the Shipmentt Green Sea Mobility Showroom and thus promote the platform and the opportunities it offers for Montenegrin enterprises, as well.

This event will be followed by workshops and 1:1 mentoring work with the maritime SMEs to provide support for them to try to materialise their innovative ideas into concrete products and services, network with their counterparts in the ADRION region and find investors for further development of innovative products and services.
